Media, Photography and Art.

On Friday the 3rd I went to the David Hockney Exhibition at the NGV. Although I have been an avid lover of art and the NGV respectively, this is the first time I went in the evenings for the ‘NGV at Night’ Exhibitions, where the gallery opens a number of exhibitions later at night for members. I had not been familiar with Hockney’s works prior to the exhibition, but I was inspired by his works, particularly in light of my photography.

Whilst I was there, I was actually drawn to our week one reading about Hyper and Deep Attention. Somewhere like an art gallery involves both hyper and deep attention to really engage with the art in front of you – you use hyper-attention to absorb the initial thoughts about the artwork and then you use deep attention to engage with what the artist is saying. My favourite form of art would have to be contemporary and modern art due to its relevance to a modern age.  Hockney’s work uses bright colours, particularly in his portrait series which was painted up until now. I also really enjoy NGV’s use of screen media in this exhibition, with interactive portions mingled in with the artworks. Attached is a video of Hockney talking about his works at the NGV. You can also reference the significance of Making Media Studies here, with the evolution of places like galleries as a form of social interaction and how exhibitors and gallery organizers are now focused on immersing the individuals into the artwork and the artist rather than just showing them a painting – engaging them in the creative process.
