Sound, Perspective and Distance (Week 10 Reading)

For this week’s reading (week 10… eeeek – we are drawing closer to the end of the semester!!), it directed towards the interesting topic of spatial distance and positioning in reference to videography. To be honest, I didn’t find this reading particularly interesting but I went through it anyway.

There are three types of perspective in videography; social distance (medium shot), personal distance (close shot) and public distance (long shot). This perspective creates horizontal and verticle angles, which, in turn – creates power relations. Differentiating from the sound (sound create a ‘wrap around’ medium). Sound can also create social distance as well ranging from close to far soundwaves. For example, radio and broadcasting people change their voice depending on the broadcast (eg: an “early listening station”). These can be categorized as intimate distance, personal distance, informal distance, formal distance and public distance.
