Week Seven Reflection

On Monday’s class, we focused on critical peer analysis, which I feel like it is getting easier and easier (hurrah!) – I also can see the difference in people who are seasoned writers and those who are just starting out (nothing bad, just learning to see the difference). We had a whole range of food (maccas for me doesn’t count as food exactly, but we’re making it count for this exercise), movies (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, which I… Loved (excuse the pun) as well as music (Splint’s album) and Television (Sharp Objects, which I was considering watching – the review did it justice!). Mine is being reviewed next week, so hopefully, my feedback is good – I am a bit nervous, but I suppose I get my work read online, I find that scarier than a class full of fifteen people (I suppose because these people are also my peers, which makes everything a little worse). I’m also enthralled to get my work read because I enjoy learning how to improve, especially through my food writing.

In our Thursday session (which I had to leave a little bit early due to Fashion Week), we had an in-house session withCerise Howard and Faith Everard (producer and host) from Plato’s Cave on RRR (‘Triple R’ Radio). It was interesting to learn the production and time (and effort) that goes into producing both a live radio broadcast and a podcast of the show – I had thought about making a podcast at one point in my career, but I now understand how time-consuming and difficult it is, and how intertwined the roles are in the media sphere. I really enjoyed the critic’s session as it gave me a better understanding of behind-the-scenes of a media production role, rather than simply learning about it in class through theory! I feel like podcasting is more suited towards critical analysis of some mediums, such as movies as Plato’s Cave is, however, I am still stuck as to how a food podcast would work that is not an ‘interview’ style that has been done previously – I will have to give it a think and report back on my findings, but the insight towards creating a radio show and the idea of ‘liveness’ is prevalent and something that I learn through Thursday’s session.
