Development of Work: Photography + Location

Last week, I set out on finding my location (somewhere that I had not has full previous knowledge of) and to shoot my series of photos there. I decided on Fiztroy, a place known for its art and ‘cool’ (melbourne hipster’s, if you will) – although most will know that it is quite famous for this, the photography I wanted to portray for my major work was the ‘suburb’ and ‘urban’ aspects of Melbourne that people know and love about the city – I wanted to portray the hidden aspects of noticing that most individuals do not pick up on in the everyday urban environment.

Picking the right location for my piece was probably the most important step in eliminating bias in my project, so people do not bring in their specific biases towards my own project – this was one of the ‘BIG’ things that I discussed in my first blog post.

Once I had developed my location and was there, I also had to think about the framing of the photos to prevent bias too. If I framed the photo in a certain way, it would bring attention to details in the pictures. Thus, I focused on wide angle framing with my lens at 50mm (they were all the same focal length) to capture all details in the frame, whilst still giving people options to focus on different ideas.

Once developing my photos, I also developed them in black and white. I plan to get different groups of people to view the black/white vs the colour to gain insight on how individuals notice aspects of media due to the colour that they are presented in – this is something I want to look at further.
