Week Five Reflection

Week Five has been the start of our peer reviews, which is slightly nauseating because we not only have to give feedback (trying to phrase feedback in a constructive way is always hard) but we also have to have our work criticised. I’ve had my work edited (mostly for ‘voice’ purposes for a publications voice), but I’ve never really had that done to a peer-to-peer degree, especially when they’re sitting in front of me. I’m in Week Eight, so I have some time to sort out what I am doing (although Alexia does say a ‘draft’, it’s never really a true ‘draft’ with me as I tend to try and re-fine all my work, which can be tough when trying to edit!)

In our Week Five second workshop, we had a film critic, Alex Heller-Nicholas create a critic workshop in the cinema building. Movies, for me, aren’t my forté (as you would know, it’s food for me) – but it was interesting expanding my writing capacity to a new realm and figure out what other themes I can gather from film writing into my own career in food criticism. We watched a short film – I’m You, Dickhead (2014), referencing themes of masculinity, sexism and ‘Aussie’ films. We then had to do a short writing piece (which I struggled with, to be honest) in capsule reviewing. In reference, I thought I would write about the themes and the tug-of-war that is Australian short film and the comedic elements that it references. It will be interesting to broaden my horizons and write in a different critique spectrum that I can add to my writing skills.
