Week Two Reflection

Everyone’s A Critic is probably my favourite class this semester – I am a review by nature (and my career), so being able to choose a major based upon my future career is super exciting, especially forming a strong portfolio at the end.

We’ve brainstormed what makes a strong review, as well as critical analysis of others work. For my first review piece, I chose the “Death of the Snow Egg” – Peter Gilmore’s masterpiece from Quay. I received positive feedback during Week Two reflections, with a note to tighten up some of the phrases in my piece.

In our second class for the week, we discussed Tricky’s album ‘Maxinquaye’ – listening to parts of the album and discussing our own conclusion (I felt the album was very ‘club’ orientated and relaxed hip-hop, a contrast to many artists today) as well as reading two critical reviews on the album itself. The reviews itself were more a critical analysis – highlighting not only just the music (if anything, it doesn’t describe the music) but the concepts behind Tricky’s work. This analysis of the ‘show don’t tell’ analysis highlights the need to describe an atmosphere, not just the album/food/character.
