Fandoms (“Harry Potter” Reading)

In this week (week eight!)’s reading, it was focused around fandoms, in particular – the Harry Potter Fandom. Fans are the reason why something is successful, in my opinion. The Harry Potter Series (along with classics such as Narnia and The Hunger Games – from the same genre) is one of the most popular young adult novels of this time. Harry Potter, being a ‘timeless classic’ has now been translated into over 70 languages and has had movies, spin-offs, merchandise, Pottermore (a website) and Harry Potter World. The reading this week explored the opening of “Harry Potter World” in Disneyland Orlando and the event (Nimbus 2010) that occurred for the launch. The author describes not only himself but all of the other individuals being dressed up as various characters from the show and exploring the ‘world’ that is apart of the Harry Potter series. The task that Disney undertook to build such a feat (with so many followers, there is so much pressure to create something that is great in my opinion!), it has both controversy and love. I think, with such a popular franchise, it is inevitable to hate and controversy as everyone has their own opinions and desires for the production of the theme park – everyone will want something different as they interpret the books and movies differently.
