Television, Streaming and Audience Fragmentation

This week in the lecture, we had the last guest speaker for the semester (Roman Lobato) come and discuss the power of subscription models, netflix, and broadcast television. There are many different types of television ecology: catch-up (SBS on Demand), SVOD (netflix), TVOD (itunes), AVOD (youtube). Subscriptions services such as Netflix allow recommendations and categorisation – allowing the individual to not only ‘binge-watch’ but also tailor their experience to suit what they want.

This contrasts broadcast television which is based on hits run advertising model that is usually centered around sports/news and event television versus subscription services such as Netflix which is over the top, curated and on-demand content that can be personalized to the individual.
