Week Nine Blogpost

Blog: Write 300 words reflecting on some of the editing techniques from the reading that you might apply to your film. How will these techniques help to convey emotion and story in your film.

The reading helped me build a greater understanding of the editing process and what elements I am going to use to shape the emotion and story of my Sunda Dining film. The Transparency versus Reflexivity segment of the reading I found highly useful, as it allowed me to have a greater understanding of ‘rules of sequence’ that I should follow when actually shooting and filming my piece. While ‘establish the geography of a space first off’ will allow me to greater develop my storyline, without having to give too much context through verbal or voice-over. I have enjoyed the documentary styles of observational and participatory as I feel like they engage the audience to a higher degree than experimental, but this will also work in favour of my subject and storyline. The ideas of sound was something that I hadn’t really considered, but now I take much more notice of after the sound exercise in class – as well as how sound can convey emotion and add to a storyline. I also want to mask my sound with an overlay track to allow the video to have some fluidity and continuous sound elements to it. Through the reading, I have learnt more about the editing process and how I should go about shooting my documentary to make the editing process easier for me in the long run, rather than piecing together material that may not be coherent. These techinques will allow me to convey emotion into my story as it will add to my emotive video, which will add another layer through sound and editing.
