Thinking Hats – Giving Constructive Feedback.

I find it very challenging to give feedback, so I found it incredibly interesting to critique someone else’s work. We used the De Bono “Thinking Hats” method when giving feedback, so it is all created equally. These hats are as followed:

  1. The White Hat: information known or needed
  2. The Yellow Hat: Brightness and Optimism – positive feedback about the piece
  3. The Black Hat: Judgement, Critical Analysis
  4. The Red Hat: Feelings about the piece (like/dislikes)
  5. The Green Hat: Creative Possibilities (what they can improve on next time creatively, new concepts + perceptions)
  6. The Blue Hat: managing the thinking process – this is the ‘observer’

I found this process effective because it allowed you to step away from your own constructive views, whilst still giving good feedback. It also allows all of the notions to be explored, so the individual can get a sense of their work as a whole – not just positive and negative points.
