Media – Week 1 Update

Here is a bit of a re-cap on Week 1, which can serve as a (very rough) guide to what you might do in your ‘Weekly update’ pairs as part of assessment task 5.

We’ll start getting you to produce these from next week onward, thanks to Alana and Shannon for kindly putting their hands up.

Week 1 was a bit of a whirlwind, but saw us produce some really great work.  Personally I was really impressed with the depth of discussion generated, both form the Media crew and the Creative Writing cohort.

Monday’s session revolved around breaking down the studio into some key terms, and brainstorming these, along with creating a ‘watchlist’ of reference series’:

Comedy Producing Watchlist Series Web

The CW’s then joined us to add to the discussion around these terms, which gave us all a chance to meet up for the first time.

In Wednesday’s workshop, we picked up our discussion and refined it to generate a brief for the writing students to work off.  This was a big challenge, with a lot of different suggestions to accommodate – in particular the various styles of comedy that we wanted to put forward.  We broke into individual tables, with each table responsible for writing 1 paragraph (4 in total):

  • Aims
  • Background – Production (roles)
  • Background – Comedy (with reference clips)
  • Background – Web series (audience, online platforms)

We then arrived at our finished brief, ready to send to the CW class.

Jeremy, Cody, Adrian and Eie Kie and I then went to the CW class for a quick discussion, and answered some great questions – mostly focussed around the limitations such as locations and amount of characters, as well as some ideas about roles; writers acting & directing in particular.  This gave a great insight into what we’ll be investigating over the coming weeks;  how writers and producers come together in the development and realisation of a comedy web series.

Each student responded to the questions very well and made an excellent contribution toward setting up successful collaborations for the rest of the Semester.  A big thank you to those who put their hand up to come along!
