The Language of Moments – a portrait by Margot

The Language of Moments

The Language of Moments is a 20-minute reflective film, a video portrait; encompassing the interesting place to exist that is in fact a young adult’s brain with all of its thoughts and feelings. It is revolved around my housemate Oliver; a boy-man who is quiet, loving and interesting. His interests in skating and painting have melted into goo, oozing through his soul and becoming his personality. His inner dialogue is consistently active; pondering, questioning, reflecting. This film is reflective of his personality, a love letter if you wish to his ability to be an organic human being with feelings and conceptual abilities. It could perhaps be seen as a coming-of-age reflection, exploring the deep thought processes that young people endure during their lives.

This screen project helped me to realise an idea in a succinct way, and let me hide less behind effects and overlays and instead trust that my compositions and shots were ‘enough’. Music I made with my housemate as well as footage that is entirely my own make up the film. I learnt an assortment of skills throughout this process, but I think what improved the most was my editing in terms of my organisation and ability. Using my Fujifilm X-H1 and Panasonic handycam, I was able to film Oliver in various situations to create a depiction of who he was and how he got to be this way. There is still a lot I have to work on with this media piece and as a media maker but I am excited to see where this process can lead me.
