Most of the time when we shoot documentaries, we always involve the “human”. At this time, for “human” we have a sense of free mind, which is different from other species. It is important for our ordinary people and the owners of some valuables have the right to portrait and the right to know. So we need to hold policies to protect others and protect ourselves.

First of all, in my opinion, we must respect and love the people we shoot. This is crucial because our subjects are human and we need to treat each other as equals. So we need subjects’ consent of their story and make sure they are willing to talk to us. Also, informed they know all the consequences which can happen and participate with it. Next, if necessary we have a responsibility to protect them from the risk of what saying something secret. Especially when you are journalists or reporter, preventing the risk can be your routine. Such as mosaic faces or change the voice for some people so that they can not be recognized and be retributed, and their story can be better presented to the public. Other “respecting” example refers to the week 4 class PPT(2020, Rohan) is subjects must give consent that they will participant and fully understand: 1:the overall goals of the project, 2: the intended audience, 3: Possible conflicts of interest. Every above prepare need to be done before the cameras on. Ahead to the end. I think as we respect them as the main character and our core creator, they have the same right as we have, they can preview the product before we published it.

Of course, protecting ourselves is important too. A lawsuit may occur if a participant feels they have been misrepresented by us. In very rare cases they may feel defamed or they haven’t given informed consent. So we have to make a personal release (Release Forms) that get as many as possible signed by the participants before film. We will also need to print a copy with it to make sure they understood the details we’ve already told them and agree with our shooting. I think Australia has already done an excellent job of protecting both sides.

Finally, I hope that everyone can cooperate peacefully and communicate as much as possible rather than go to court.

When I start with the non fiction media, I believe our job is to make a video reflect the real world and convince the audience this story truly happened in the real world. Also, as a producer, I hope that my production can bring to the public a meaningful and thoughtful moment.

In the practice of A4 in the Real to Real course, my group members and I made a short documentary movie to present the Tattoo worker’s life. Ever since I thought about the tattoo, it eminently brings me an image in my mind, that is needle penetrates the skin and shrill sound. From my experience, I can find that the things that produce great direct stimulation are images and sounds. So, I strongly recommend our photographer Donna to take an extreme close-up of tattooing. Because close-ups can emphasise the subject, it contains fewer details in the shot and provides higher quality focus and stimulation to the audience. It turns out, all my team members are happy about that and we make this shot as our opening shot.

Next frame is also a practical frame. It shows the character sit there and the background is moving, which present the information she is going to a place. It’s also a daily life for some people, come and back to the office and home. So it is very close to reality. In addition, the character does not have much movement but this image shows the high quality of reflecting the real world. It can refer in The wolfpack(2015, M. Crystal) too. The camera is no many moving, but the character and the frame is often alive, and the angle and hight are generally as same as a person’s field of view. Moreover, this movie’s director is very good at shooting daily life. She shows “convincing” to the audience by how she is experiencing the story you are looking at. Presenting various routine that as same as ours is clever.

Finally, to sum up, the static of sitting there is very immersive. You can also try the first-person perspective when you have too many similar shots, which is also very immersive. However, beginners need to practice constantly, you can start the interview with the interviewee looking at the camera. Overall, I feel that we have done a good job in this short documentary.

First of all, I have to admit that I am not the best collaborator. I think it is because I still don’t know what and how is the best cooperator. However, I will always try to search for my best position in the group.

I think I did well is I would try my best to do the offer that my group members gave. Of course, as far as I can do. Such as temporary title the folder and video in my spare time and other group members are currently doing other things.

We did not determine the individual’s responsibilities at the beginning. In my opinion, maybe the best way to being a group is we had a clear leader. Next time we need to improve that. For this production, we slowly divided the tasks according to each one’s claim. Of course, I believe people are good at doing different things. This is an excellent way to see everyone’s high light and wishes clearly. What I mean here is we should not impulsive decided at the beginning. But the same time, people could have a hard time taking responsibility for something. If you decide at the beginning, you can improve your efficiency to some extent. For example, this time, we have a document submit late. This is because responsibilities are not handed to the individual. If the duty is decided early, if the job is not done well, there will be a person to tack responsibility. So that person will do his best to complete the job.

I have a media account driving by myself. This is considered as a freelancer of media, I suppose. I am good at doing as a solo practitioner to create and shoot freely. Self-service working time is time-saving, especially when you are both actors, directors and photographers. I do not have to draw, the idea can be combined together in my mind, and it reduces a lot of communication time. But if the project is big and the model or lighting is me, then I have to go through a slow period to get the quality shot and it will be a hard time. I still look forward to the teamwork in the future.

W5/6: VIEWING ACTIVITY

An only 8 mins short film Last Address (2012, Dir. Sachs, I) is a movie that makes me sad. An elegiac film made up of exterior images of an AIDS group of artists from NewYork city. A great film makes people think deeply about the meaning of human existence and those who are discriminated against, because we can do nothing. Thanks to the author for bringing these unknown but meaningful people and addresses to the screen.

In the technic perspective, every frame used in this movie is static; it is not a photo but presented in front of you like a piece of moving world. It’s like you staring at them. In addition, how footage framing is similar to the practice photo collection, we learned in week 2. They both use the same method to describe objects, but this movie is mostly about place residences in different places. These “homes” were the traces left by different people. However, only the “empty” in these rooms, almost no one knows what happened here, and until time no longer gives the opportunity, no one will have a memory of this place. I also noticed that he didn’t use background music, which made his documentary more realistic. He used the original sound throughout the whole film. Voice so matched scene, till now they are still looked the same. After watching, I believe it makes people feel that their world is nothing but dust in the world, which breaks everyone’s heart.

Above, it made me think about our interview documentary can also be more real so that the audience can feel more substituting and the authenticity of the characters. But if we want to make a happy and relaxed documentary, we need to consider putting in some rhythm. Adding a little music can significantly improve the lonely feeling.

A1: W3: WISEMAN FILMING ACTIVITY_A observational montage film_Elsa

My sister always starts her homework wherever she likes, no matter how bad and chaotic she is, she can learn well, this time in the study room. First of all, I start with an observational full shot to my sister. This shot shows the relations between the character and space. It is important to reveal the location at the beginning because it can reveal a lot of information to the audience, and make a preview to tell the audience what will happen next. Also, I arranged an open and close door movement, which lead us to a more interactive scope. Not an observation from the annoying long-distance place but get into the situation.

Comparing to the noisy environment at the beginning of the video, it is much quieter now. I added the very iconic homework writing sound in the background to control and emphasis the sense of rhythm.  I use the cowboy shot to bring the audience closer to the situation, meantime character began to read the poem and get her homework out. She shows her anxiety when she touches the feet, which is also the emotional movement powerful in the shot to explain the inner activity of the character. After that, I quickly shift the screen to tell the audience that her homework requires speed and she is a little nervous, and it is useful.

I also arranged some cutaway to present that my sister’s picture means she is lived with us, she is not independent yet. Plas, the table shows she has no arrangement for this assignment. Furthermore, suddenly she stops every movement to drink milk as relaxed all her bad feeling. Following with a slower and longer version of the video, and turn down the sound a bit to create a more relaxing feeling. His feet were quiet at this stage. It also means whether the work or the short film is almost near the end. Finally, I use a relatively full-length shot with a put-down voice and a long sigh of relief to tell this is the end of the film.

1 Inmage:Dora plays green after playing iron, Elsa, 2020.

We played golf after my sister back from school. Because it was autumn, the temperature difference between morning and night was great, so she wore a blue coat, but I didn’t. I was boring to be her teacher, so I decided to shoot her during this process. Shooting her is never an easy job. She is often natural in a front camera for video, but the photo is different: it is an entirely static state. She likes to do some wair face to the camera. Therefore, I had to capture during the whole process, this also brings a sense of dynamics into the shot.

She hit the golf round and round as slow as usual. Consequently, I didn’t want to shoot that part, it would not be uninteresting. After punching the ball, she came to the green, where we practice technic that leads to the hole. Because it doesn’t require much power, she seems a relaxed bit more. In order to introduce the space to the audience, I took a full shot view so that it can contain almost all the details and content.

2 Inmage:set up the goal for her.

We set up a goal, and then she had to reach the destination from a certain distance. She’s unfortunate to get to the hole, I thought was because she did not take it seriously. After a few failures, she became annoyed, frowned and stomped. Not to me, but the camera. There were only past 10 minutes. She told me this is too hard for her, so we changed the goal from 50 scores to 40 scores. After the 30 minutes, She looked better and more concentrated on the practice. The photo with close-up shows the feeling of aiming.

3 Inmage:Aiming at the target but playing crookedly (she played the right side of the middle two balls)

As time went by, the sun almost fells down. The weather was getting colder. She looks so little under the sunset, so I took the picture behind her. It would make her taller, I thought. The balls fell scattered beside this perfect parallel line. It gives people a sense of stability facing the goal. And I am also very lucky to have this line, which can better guide my sister. When my phone focused on the golf club, I find that this club was not hers. However, she used it like it belongs to her. Twenty minutes passed by, not yet half, a bit disappointed.

4 Inmage:Pouting angry face

The face of her seemed more unhappy. Contrast to the first picture, her moon gradually turned to blue. I told her to complete the aim and then return to the car before I left, just like when I was trained before. Meanwhile, the weather was chilly and I went back to the car.

5 Inmage:Say nothing in the car at the end of the journey

After about 10 minutes, she finally finished. She looked tired and didn’t say a word. I guess it’s about no one was there to look after her for the last 10 minutes and how slow she was. Plus, it was dinner time; she also told me she is hungry. I presented this feeling in the photo with the light hitting the lower half of the face. The drooping eyes show her closedness in the gloom. It makes people feel gloomy.

Growing up and studying is sometimes lonely, but I am responsible for her future when I am strict with her. At this time, I was not only a sister but also a teacher.

A1: Folio Item_A photographic collection_Elsa

First of all, I will introduce The meaning of why am I shooting the golf ball. I want to address what golf means to me and in these pictures. Golf is a gentility and free sports. Gentlemanly refers to etiquette and upbringing, which is the most important rules of golf. The first course of golf is to be polite to everyone and respect to the regulation, strict and conscientious. Second The freedom is this little white ball not only it can be anywhere depends on “you”, but also you can play this sport freely by yourself, just one person. Unlike other activities enquires many people. Plus, most of the time they play golf on the grass mat or on the real grass because that’s the rule of golf and if they do that they score more efficiently.

Next, through these pictures, we can see the story before the ball has been played. Such as where is located, is the man good at plays golf or is just some children threw it out to the crushed glass, having a positive future on the grass waiting for a hit or as if no one would never care about lying there alone. Maybe it lay down on the tee, just waiting for a hit. A lucky one can be some children’s toy on the table, never need to afford rain and the sun.

I’ve done some Post reproduction to these images. Because I need to ensure those photos are in the same size, adjust subjects in the middle of the picture and approximately the same size. I lowered my contrast because I was shooting with a mobile phone, so the contrast was automatically set by the mobile phone. Compared with the original photo, the contrast of my phone is higher. In addition, I also improved its vividness and black point.
To address its freedom even in one golf play area, it contains many golf ball. But next time, if covid-19 is passed, I will try a different subject that has a distance.
