Week 2- It Pays to Look Up

Walking to Melbourne Central our pens hit paper as soon as a man with a long beard slaps a white piece of paper against the post and secures it with tape

our list begins

1. posters protest attacks on education
2. street signs inform people of  roadworks
3. fast food outlets flash their neon signs on surrounding buildings
4. public transport houses Melbourne Food and Wine Festival advertisements
5. the state library hosts a protest with loud singing and bright colours
6. Telstra not only supplies their details in the telephone booth but also on one of the cities many skyscrapers
7. a laneway reveals a painted Nike campaign
8. pop-up shops attract buyers with their quirky displays
9. the crowd is consumed by their phones, eyes glued to screens and ears plugged in with headphones
10. music floats from store to store
11. oxfam representatives try to capture by-passers attention with friendly greetings and free handouts
12. the station provides free newspapers for your long journey home
13. clothing outlets try to grasp your attention with colourful branding and bright lights
14. video displays appear from walls, ceilings and the ground flashing the latest phone company deals as you pass by

I found it was quite overwhelming the amount of media i came across whilst ‘noticing’ today. Melbourne Central is full of advertisements whether they be plastered onto a building, painted onto a wall or printed on someones t-shirt; they seem to consume the space in which we sat.

Another matter was the majority of people surrounding me who seemed to be switched into a virtual world; whilst i was noticing them, they had no awareness of my watching eyes or in fact they had no awareness of any of their physical surroundings as they bumped and bounced their way through the crowds, heads buried in screens and minds lost in music

i understood today that to ‘notice’ you need to be alert and observe your surroundings in a way that most people don’t
to separate yourself from the natural flow of everyday life and to STOP and LOOK UP

(the audio in this footage is ironic as i did not mean to capture on of  my classmates informing someone that she had never noticed ‘something’ before)
