The scene: Foreign Shopkeeper 4

This scene was covered during our 2 hour class on Wednesday. The scene is about two people encountering a possibly dead person on the floor. but turns out he’s alive and ‘Fine’. I was inspired by Citizen kane. so I did things Orson Welles like. I was even going to act if there was no one else to step up. but luckily quite a number of people were put with me and I felt like the experiment was a success. That was the first time i actually directed from scratch! I made the script, read the actors their lines (because i have terrible handwriting) camera angles were aided by my handy camera man Jason, But i got to approve and modify them as I pleased. Number of shots. and i even got to say ‘action’ on all shots. It felt like i knew what i was doing, people were nodding to my suggestions and did as i told them. Its like being a boss for a short period of time

I enjoyed that class, I thought that it was a silly script and would not really be an idea i would visualise and make into something.. real?

So, this investigation is supposed to reflect on having a “real” conversation. little to no reverse shots for dialogue. I elongated the shots and made them speak all the necessary lines whilst including all three characters in frame. Like Citizen kane. (Visual aid in my previous blog post). I considered doing reverse shots but then it would tarnish the feeling of actually being in the room and witnessing these two people have a really weird conversation about calling the dead. It felt like I used Tan as a prop as the dialogue was being spoken. He wasn’t doing anything, he was sort of just present and in frame but not conscious or aware. And i think i learnt that from watching breaking bad and better call Saul. Its including something yet somehow separating it in a way.
