M6: Media Industries Part.2 getting things done

As there were 12 of us in a group, I decided to take care of the social media side of our little fellowship. Being responsible for the online presence of our twitter and Instagram account. Not being fully responsible for online marketing, but the image we portray through various platforms.

I found it difficult to promote our cause, We had only one poster to show and it was stripped bare from the key information as we had none yet, or at least nothing concrete. as a group we only would have met twice, but for various reasons the people who made the theme ‘in(ternet)ception’ were not present when all the other group members joined. Due to the nature of the schedule, we had to do a lot of things in a short time (2 weeks).

some of us were trying to change the theme and really ask what inception has to do with the three people that we may or may not be calling as guest speakers. some of us thought that inception has so much baggage and references to it, we won’t want nolan fans to come charging in thinking its about the film.

so it was almost like there were two parts of the group. the first people are the ones who thought of and formed the group. The extras and latecomers are in group two. Alpha and Beta.

since all i had to do was keep on posting on instagram and twitter, i was waiting for images to be sent from the other members to know they’ve approved it and want it on our page. Fig 1 is one of our earlier posters, we changed the name to online presence because it seemed to make more sense in terms of what we are trying to show, i was also the one to suggest changing the theme into a more retro technologically equipped 90’s theme because the people we are asking are people raised around that era. 90’s themed clothing, style, songs have become a trend once again for the same reasons.

As we go further into the weeks that lead up to the seminar, i was approached by the steering committee and asked who was the one in charge of social media. So I freely raised my hand and informed them what I’ve been up to behind the phone online. And Kevin (steering committee) said that what i was doing isn’t too shabby. but he told me to use RMIT Adventure’s account rather than the one I made myself for the group. So when the day came I was torn between 4 accounts to mess around with and update.

For the actual seminar we were equipped with a ton of stuff we barely knew how to use, the MG16 audio mixer to name one, the old NX70 cameras and a box of wires are not exactly eye candy in a high stress situation. since many of the group members were off doing their own individual tasks, i was told of the audio mixer having to be used. Since I knew social media didn’t need much tending to, I went on an excursion to know more about the enemy we call technology.

I had learned all i can through tutorials on youtube on setting up, removing feedback and using miss and what not. All i needed was a physical demonstration with the mixer. I needed it in my hands and in front of my eyes to know what I’m facing. after seeking knowledge from the almighty tech guys at building 9, i walk strut to building 80 with all the know hows of the mixer.

But to my disappointment, the mixer wasn’t used because the Auxilery wire didn’t work or something technical like that. Even the AV guy suggested we use the room’s microphones and not bother with the mixer.
