Media Internship Posts

1. I had been leaving the internship to the very last few weeks of my final year. I’ve been anxious about the day I have to choose a job. I had been putting it off for a while. So I contacted Winnie about any available internships or openings. I had found a couple actually. I’d been sending to each one that applies to me. Most of the available internships have specified that they want some sort of professional communication or journalism students. By week 9 I had only sent about 10 resumes to Winnie’s forwarded emails. But it was either too late and the applications have closed or they never reply. I have also gone off the radar and tried emailing production companies on job ads. Although I have never tried cold calling, I don’t believe I have enough accreditations to be calling companies selling my talents.

2. After following through with one of Winnie’s email about an available internship for a company called Rebuildit. I had made arrangements as to when to meet after I sent my CV and video links. The person of contact was called Peter Mulherin. Little did I know he’s the founder of various companies But I did a quick Google search on him and he seems to have made a name for himself. I sent him a link to some of my video work, he said that he liked it and in the same email he asked what forms he has to fill in to get on with it. I was surprised as to why he was very hasty and it was proof to me that they were desperate for some production stuff. But I was in no position to refuse this long awaited internship, so I reserved a time to meet with peter and exchanged contact details.

3. I met peter in RMIT in one of the study spaces, It was an interview so I dressed well and thought of some witty comments to say to him later to say that I’m not just a blank canvas. So I called him after I arrived a bit earlier to say that I would be waiting outside the café. We didn’t straight away discuss the job responsibilities, like any conversation we had to have a little chat about where I’m from, what I can do for his business etc. Then after I told him I went to an international school, he laughed and said that he could tell. I suppose not sounding like how I look like could be an advantage and intrigue potential employers. Although it is slightly racist, expecting me to speak a certain way because of the way I look. But then again he was Canadian and I thought he was Australian, can’t complain. After we did all that, he showed me a cheesy video of him talking about his business made by past RMIT internships. He wants me to make an informational video about his business.

4. I have already met him twice at this point to update on the progress of the pre production. Things like: storyboards, bullet points and I had thought of some questions to ask him for my own benefit of knowing what to capture on screen. Like knowing the competition and what the potential clients look like so I know whom I’m trying to sell to. I want it to be different and better than the example he showed me in our previous meeting. I had told him that I could only start fleshing it out after a certain date because it is the end of semester and work is piling up. He completely understood and said it was fine. Although, I’m working for free so he really can’t dictate too much as to how much I should work on this project. I believe at this point I already have a clear picture of what I want to do when the day comes for me to actually record and do my job. So I think I’m in the clear, I just have to wait for all this pre planning to be executed.
