A5 pt2 Studio Review

In our studio I have some insights into the short films created by Pewen Wen and Xinran Wang. The first thing that can be ascertained is that their short films introduce the main technique of film at the beginning – the contrast method. This is a very clever decision, as contrast can quickly catch the eye of the audience. It is also an interesting choice of subject for the film – real roommates and fake roommates. It’s very daily, like a Big Bang Theory episode, funny, lively, and complete. Most of all, their film cost almost nothing, the lighting was all natural, the actors were themselves, and the location was in an apartment building. It can be said that they fully met the requirements for the creation of a low-budget film, but there were some minor problems in the post-production of the film, such as the fact that the recording of the film did not look like it was done with recording equipment, so it was sometime big and sometime small. Secondly, the plot lacks a sense of rhythm, perhaps due to the lack of material. In the end, I think there is still a lot of room for improvement in this short film. The film does a good job in choosing its subject, but it needs more practice in post-production.

Another short film I would like to review is ‘the call’. It’s a micro-horror short film, the overall atmosphere of the film is very good, the images are dark, and the music is well done, in my opinion it’s a smart choice to go for a low-budget horror film as the cost can be reduced to zero. In fact, there were no production costs, the only costs were probably for some of the props in the film, such as the masks and the black coats. In my opinion, the film is more about the music ‘scaring’ the audience and the quick cuts to create a sense of tension. Everyone’s understanding of the story will be different. This film doesn’t have much of a story, although it doesn’t detract from the overall atmosphere, and its normal production practice for horror films to weaken the story, but I would have liked some psychological fear or realistic fear in the story. Overall, the film achieves what is expected of a low-budget film, but the plot and choice of topic are not too surprising and for me I will probably forget it the next day, although there are some bright spots in the music and editing techniques. This film is a contrast to the first film I reviewed, and I think both films can learn from each other’s strengths.

I was more curious about sound futures studio, and I was particularly attracted by the work of the Machine Future group. Their audio production is very interesting, and I think their work conveys the sound futures studio’s production philosophy – innovative, advanced, and professional. Their work reminds me of a game – Detroit – in which one of the main characters has a very artificially intelligent voice but he is not artificially intelligent, he is a bionic human. So, his voice is very ‘twisted’ and at the same time very memorable. This is a good explanation of the importance of voice in projects such as film, television, and games, where the voice can create a memory point, just like the brainwashing music on short video platforms nowadays. Exploring the future of sound is also exploring the future of artwork in film, television, and games, as music is an integral part of these artworks, and great music can bring more streams and value. I even think that the director’s name and the sound production’s name should be put together at the beginning of the film, as they are equally important, but unfortunately the public will not remember the silent sound producer.

A#4 – Mingyang Yao – Go game

Logline
The advent of artificial intelligence has upset the balance of the Go world, with even the best human Go players being defeated by AI in 2017, and no one has been able to beat AI Go in the decade since. Jie’s life seems to be all about Go, and he is constantly looking for ways to beat the AI. He hardly ever leaves home or participates in recreational activities, instead spending his days playing against computers or Go masters. Even his sister, who loved him most, left him – in order for him to grow up.

Written reflection

I hope my work lives up to the studio’s expectations in terms of plotting and editing. Although this is a low-budget film, clever or intriguing plotting can take the whole film beyond its worth. And the quality of the editing determines the upper and lower limits of the whole film, so I spent a lot of time adjusting the rhythm of the editing.

Although this was a near zero budget film, my equipment was my iphone12, and the actor was my girlfriend. The funding was only $50. If more could have been spent on the picture, the equipment and the people, the quality of the film would have been further improved.

On the other hand, the biggest trouble I have with the creative process is that I am both a director and an actor. I must use accurate fixed shots to ensure that my images match my expectations. In addition, I had to communicate my script and ideas to the actors in advance, which I found to be the most problematic thing about the whole process. Firstly, even a professional actor can’t fully understand what the director is really thinking, let alone a vegetarian actor who doesn’t even have a strong sense of acting or camera work. You need to try and communicate repeatedly to get the picture to meet half of your expectations (I guess). I have learnt on reflection that you have to let the actor fully understand your ideas and the plot before shooting to ensure the shoot goes smoothly, otherwise it’s a waste of each other’s time.

I had the general framework of the story at the beginning of the course, but when I wrote it down, I realized that the script left a lot to be desired. I also experienced the pain of writing a script – never being satisfied, always feeling that something was wrong, and even wondering if my work would suck. I must thank my girlfriend who gave me positive feedback so that I could stop obsessing over my script, which I ended up completing in about two weeks. The next step was to purchase the filming equipment and I purchased a retractable phone mount to ensure my fixed shots were accurate. The next step was filming, which I expected to complete within a week. The final step was editing, which is my strong point, so I wasn’t too worried about it. I found a free background music online and edited my footage to the beat of the music. The final step was to review my film to see if there were any flaws in the video footage and editing rhythm, if the music and sound effects were too big or too small, if there were any errors in the subtitles, etc.

To conclude, I am not particularly happy with my short film, it is not my best level or work. But I have still grown and learnt new things from this film making and I have gained some creative experience for myself. In my next film I will avoid the mistakes I made on this shoot and use low budget filmmaking techniques to keep the budget down.

The Boredom Of Routine-Kaitlyn Nguyen

A key idea in the “The Boredom Of Routine” is the exploration of the monotonous aspects of day to day life and the impact it has on an individual. The documentary aims to highlight how one can become caught up in the hustle culture and trapped in a repetitive routine leading to a sense of boredom and lack of fulfillment.By playfully teasing the filmmaker’s brother, the story delves into the contrast between the dedication and discipline he exhibits in his studies and the mundane nature of his routine.Through this exploration ,the documentary raises questions about the consequences of routine and potential for individuals to find meaning and break free from the cycle of monotony.Overall, the documentary utilises the power of cut to effectively communicate the idea of routine boredom, by carefully selecting footage ,emphasising repetition  and shaping the narrative through editing techniques.

#5.2 Art of the microbudget- Amanda

Assignment 5.2 – Amanda Kezia Tanderitz

From my studio, the film called as “True Friend or Fake Friend” by Peiwen Wen was very interesting for me. Just from the name you would know what the story is about. Everything about the film was delivered very well. The film is very easy to understand and very simple. A film that shows two ‘friends’ who live together as a roommate but with different ways of living. One loves the house to be clean while the other one does no respect her roommate hard work in cleaning the house. This film has also showed how the process really save a lot of budgets. I can really see that the location used are exactly the place where Peiwen is living. The camera which gives a very good quality also looks like do not cost any money as from the angles in the film showed how they have used one camera or maybe just two cameras. The actress of the film which played by herself has also proven how this film is a microbudget as well as her friend who played the role as her roommates. Overall, this short film has truly saved so much budget but showing the best result for people to enjoy. The dialogue, sound, and camera are really enjoyable to watch.

Next, the film made by Xinran Wang, Reconciliation has also attracted my attention. A story about a girl who gets pressure from her mom. I think this topic is very sensitive yet powerful to young adults. Nowadays young adults might experience this a lot which mean this film is very easy to relate and interesting for young adults. From the film, I can also see how this film was made by microbudget. The film shows a few scenes where she is in her room or in her house which proves how she has saved money for the location cost and she used public space such as the beach which I think it was very smart. the beach shows how depressed she is and lost. The quality of the camera is also good and sound as well. To conclude, Reconciliation is a story which everyone can relate and very touching. It has also successfully proved that microbudget film can be great too if a lot of effort and creativity being put in.

The other studio is the poetic video studio. I have seen a few videos from this studio and there is a video named ‘Where It Went Wrong’ made by Abi Upson and Bri Richards which attracts my attention because of the style of the video. Throughout the video, it was a black and white screen. In the film, they used an angle as if it is what the girl is seeing which is very creative. Also, just like the title of the film, this film basically shows about the problem that this girl has with her boyfriend. They have made the boy into such a bad boy character and treat his girlfriend very disrespectful and dangerous. I do not know what poetic videos are supposed to be. However, I am assuming that this video is supposed to be a video that shows some artistic, or poetic. And I also think that this film has successfully shown the artistic and poetic kind of story and style.

The last film from the poetic video studio is the one titled “Echo” which made and by Lu Galante, Emma Kennedy, and Liam Johnston. This film attracts me because of the name. Echo can be related with sound and thus make me wonder how it can be made into a film. After watching the video, I am not sure what the storyline was but I love how dramatic the dance is and the music used for the dance. Even the camera angles are just so satisfying to see. This film shows the mysterious which make me as an audience to be curious. Overall, this film has also shown the poetic side.

ASSIGNMENT 5.2

I watched Ready Camera one, I watched the assignments of four groups, this is my analysis of these four videos.
THE ART OF LETTING GO:
This is the work of aashna-khurana. This work is about a story about Lucy. This story is about Art healing the protagonist. This story makes me feel very relaxed and healed. I think this story makes me feel very concise and clear. It makes me very comfortable to read. In daily life, I can also use many different methods to let go of my stress. Take it easy on yourself. The shooting method is also very life-like, which makes people feel unobtrusive.
Rescue:
Rescue is a video shot by Yixuan Huang. In his video, I think his content is very suitable because this is about network security. Every smart device may have personal information leaked. His shooting technique is very unique, used to support some of his stories in the video, the stories are very complete and unique. It makes people feel that network security is very important, and how everyone needs to get out of the path he chooses. I think his videos are very exciting. His editing technique is also eye-catching, and each breakpoint is very appropriate, making people feel that the smoothness of the video is very good.

PRIVILEGE QUIZ:
I watched the Privilege quiz video and it was very interesting. The professionalism of the two hosts chosen by the creator is also very good. The speech is very fluent. It doesn’t feel like reading a manuscript. They are very humorous, which makes me feel more integrated into the video. The participants in the video And the host is also very integrated. The judgment rules are also very good, and the questions are also realistic. But they can also invite some viewers to be an atmosphere group below to make the show more atmospheric. In this case, the whole program will be very different. In their shots, I feel that their shots are a little bit blurry, but it’s still good.
THE IMPROV GAMES:
In the video of The Improv Games, I feel that this video will be better than the previous one, because most of this video is about the watch industry and talk shows, the host is very energetic, and the whole show is also very lively. The participation rate is also very good, and it is very interesting to see people outside the venue speaking. I think this is very eye-catching, but, I think it still lacks some sense of atmosphere in terms of numbers. I hope to see laughter and applause from the audience. The fluency of the host’s speech is very good, I like this feeling very much.

I watched the works of the two groups of Ready Camera one. I think Privilege quize and The Improv games are very good. These two groups are micro-budget shows. I think I like The improv games more. I think they are this group. It’s more interesting and energetic, and I think what they do is very popular with the audience. I feel that the shooting of these two groups is quite good, and I feel that they are in line with my feeling.

#5.2 ASSIGNMENT Studio Reflection

Art of the Microbudget

STRAY
This is a little story that happened in daily life, a story between a man and a thief. I think the design of the story is very realistic but interesting. Producer Wang Zirui stated the development of the story very well, and showed the emotions and characters of the protagonist in some ways. The whole film fits the theme of Art of the Microbudget very well, with simple scenes, a small number of actors, and uncomplicated story content. But at the same time, the lower cost did not negatively affect the quality of the film, and the audience can still easily understand the story and feel the emotions in the film. If I were the producer of this film, maybe I would like to add more details to express the emotions of the characters in the film .

COME TO THE CHAT…
Compared with STRAY, COME TO THE CHAT created by antong-li has completely opposite mood and style. As a timid person, I actually didn’t have the courage to click on this video. COME TO THE CHAT combines a tense storyline with scary clips , making the whole movie even more terrifying. And Antong-Li is very good at processing music and sound effects. Many clips in the film use reasonable sound effects. In my previous studies, I have studied the importance of music to film effects, and Antong-li’s films are very good emphasizes this idea. This is worth learning and practicing.

IMMERSIVE SANDBOX

Peter Nottsworth (How I Learn to Live with Myself)
Have to admit, Peter Nottsworth is a very impressive film. Living with a clone of yourself was a never-before-seen theme and very creative. The filmmakers use interesting techniques to support the theme of cloning. For example, the protagonist and his clone appear in the same screen at the same time through editing, and the dialogue between the protagonist and the clone is recorded from different angles. I like the fact that the same shot appears at the beginning and end of the film, which makes the story seem more complete and fluid. Many of these skills are worth studying. The whole film records Peter Nottsworth’s life from a very ordinary perspective, but the unique shooting and editing techniques make the film have a high degree of completion.

“HELP” (2023)
Unlike the previous work, the atmosphere of this film is very tense and fast. I think this is also an excellent film and television work. The film tells a horror story of a VR glasses invading the real world. I really like some of the first half of the film, such as editing the protagonist in reality and the game world in VR. This is an excellent idea. As the story progresses, the mood of the whole film becomes more and more tense and weird. The protagonist encounters some strange things , and at the end there is a news report of a VR murder. There are no scary scenes in the film, but the viewers feel panic through the shooting technique and the storyline, which is very remarkable. In future creations, I will pay more attention to storytelling and details.

A5 pt2 Studio Review

1. From your studio, reflect on an aspect of two other students/group’s media work on the website in terms of specific insights they produced about a key idea addressed by the studio?

Unrequited

The short film Unrequited (2023), produced by Amanda Kezia Tanderitz, is about a girl that has previously lost her partner but still thinks and dreams about him. This film caught my attention because it focuses on the central concept explored within the studio: creating a creative short film with a micro-budget.

Firstly, the film revolves around the concept of found footage, featuring Amanda documenting her day. The decision to adopt a DIY approach was a deliberate and strategic choice, allowing Amanda to take on multiple roles and be actively involved in the production process. This level of self-reliance not only empowers Amanda but also helps minimise costs by eliminating the need to hire additional personnel and expensive camera equipment for filming. Further, the inclusion of found footage in the film highlights Amanda’s acquisition of excellent filming skills during her participation in the Art of the Micro-budget course, which extensively covered this aspect. Amanda’s proficiency in capturing footage in this style demonstrates her growth and expertise in the field, showcasing the practical application of the knowledge and techniques she acquired through the course.

Secondly, Amanda’s storyline was captivating with its compelling narrative and a poignant, yet impactful ending that evoked a deep sense of sadness. The plot was skilfully crafted to be easy to understand, allowing me to effortlessly follow Amanda’s journey from beginning to end. The emotional weight of the conclusion resonated strongly, leaving a lasting impression and eliciting a powerful emotional response. Ultimately, this serves as a testament to Amanda’s dedication and thoroughness in crafting her short film script, evident in its exceptional quality – despite being produced with minimal financial resources. The thoughtful attention she invested in the scriptwriting process shines through, resulting in a remarkable outcome that exceeds the limitations imposed by the limited budget. Amanda’s ability to create such a compelling and impactful film while working within these constraints showcases her talent and resourcefulness.

In summary, the short film Unrequited is a standout example of a creative micro-budget production, employing a found footage style that showcases Amanda’s self-reliance, excellent filming skills, and thoroughness in producing a compelling narrative with a touching ending.

Nose Candy

The Short film Nose Candy (2023), produced by Elias Tsourdalakis, is about a young man who resorts to transporting large sums of cocaine in a deal for money, to further support his cocaine addiction. This short film stands out as a testament to the core concept emphasised in the studio, as its production value defies its limited budget, creating an impression that belies the constraints of financial resources.

Firstly, the storyline captivated me with its gripping narrative, culminating in a satisfying yet intriguing ending where the demise of the cocaine smuggler left me craving for further exploration and revelations. This emphasises Elias’ dedication to crafting an enticing storyline that not only fits within the constraints of a small budget but also captivates the audience, showcasing his ability to create compelling narratives with limited resources.

Crafting a visual experience that challenge the expectations set by its limited budget, the film’s remarkable camera work skilfully created the impression of a high-end production, surpassing the perceived constraints of financial resources.

Overall, the short film Nose Candy surpasses its limited budget with a captivating storyline and impressive camera work, showcasing the filmmaker’s ability to create captivating narratives and visuals.

2. Choose one other studio then describe a key idea that you think the finished media/studio work communicated with reference to two specific examples.

People & Places

The final work showcased on the People and Places studio page embodies a central concept of capturing and exploring other people’s stories, demonstrating the student’s willingness to step out of their comfort zones. They ventured into unfamiliar territory, filming and interviewing strangers, all with the aim of creating impactful and high-quality media.

Evidently, students in this studio received comprehensive instruction on utilising high-quality cameras and effectively capturing interviews and footage throughout the course. Their proficiency in these skills was apparent, reflecting the valuable knowledge they acquired during their training.

Among the student works one that particularly captured my attention was The Travelling Shop (2023), filmed by Joe Lawless and Saskia Christensen. This piece revolves around the story of Rebecca Wilkins, an individual who never returns from her travels empty-handed. This film captivated me with its impeccable audio quality, steady and well-captured footage, and an enticing storyline that kept me engaged from start to finish.

Another film that was excellent was Does the Fog Whisper (2023), by Matilda Pridham. This film delves into the story of Scarlett Saunders, one of the few female balloon pilots in the Australian ballooning landscape. The visually stunning footage speaks volumes about Matilda’s diligent efforts in capturing every moment, as I couldn’t spot a single error throughout the film. The vibrant colours in the film made it visually captivating, enticing me to remain engaged and eager to continue watching. The audio was also perfectly balanced, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the stunning footage and the dialogue, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

In summary, the work produced by these students clearly reflects their attentive approach during classes, highlighting their dedication to learning and the acquisition of valuable skills and knowledge.

#5.2 ASSIGNMENT Studio Reflection

  • Reflection from Art of the Microbudget, RESCUE- YIXUAN HUANG

This is a desktop movie. The so-called “desktop movie” is a screen within a screen, presenting the story in the closed space of the desktop of the computer or mobile phone, all the shots are screenshots, this is what I learned from the Art of Microbudget studio. The film is like a camera shooting the whole process of a computer screen. The audience watching the movie is like looking at their own computer screen. YIXUAN uses the perspective of surveillance shooting to convey the network security issues today. The current social network covers almost every corner of the world and has become a tool for people to communicate with each other and an important part of life. When it becomes a narrative element in a movie, the audience will naturally have a sense of intimacy and trust. In addition, due to the removal of the gorgeous lens language of other movies, the narration of the story relies entirely on the surveillance video recorded on the protagonist’s computer, and all the information is placed on the screen together. The audience can join the protagonist in the whole process of the dispute between the victim and his girlfriend, from passive acceptance when watching movies in the past. Information is transformed into an active exploration of information, which brings the audience an immersive movie-watching experience like being in the scene, and helps to deepen the audience’s understanding of the story. The original threat symptoms and fear shadows that always linger in the depths of the online world in desktop movies are also the deepest fears of all digital residents living in the virtual world-uncontrollable events and a world that is no longer real.

  • Reflection from Art of the Microbudget, COME TO THE CHAT…- ANTONG LI

This also is a desktop movie, but what is different from YIXUAN HUANG is that ANTONG LI has added real-world shooting. The combination of the two brings the audience into the computer video and the real world to immerse and dissociate. The character image that appeared in the protagonist’s video dialogue only occupies the size of the window on the screen. Under the premise that the actor’s performance space is already limited, the character image constitutes a second “compression”. Relying on the advantages of unlimited magnification of performance details by movie scenes, the image of the protagonist in the desktop movie is condensed into intuitive and expressive facial expressions. Miniature performances largely enable viewers of desktop movies to explore their inner thoughts from the subtle changes on the protagonist’s face, which is a visual experience that is difficult to capture and watch in daily life. ANTONG LI’s films use the dual logic of immersion and dissociation to switch back and forth between the two states of maintaining the illusion and breaking the illusion. The audience’s temporal experience is designed as a structure of regular switching, which becomes a necessary condition for the audience to participate in the illusion.

  • Reflection from Designing Drama Studio, EPISODE 2- JIABAO MO

When I watched this film, the first thing that caught my eye was his red and blue lighting. Because from the perspective of visual spectral distribution, red and blue are located at the two extremes of visible light, they have the clearest visual experience. These two colors that have the most profound impact on human memory, red and blue light are great for creating a psychedelic and rich atmosphere. Using colored light as the background or partial rendering of the body is a very effective way while using colored light to create the entire scene, the visual effect is more complete, and the portrayal of the character’s emotions and temperament is also stronger. Therefore, combined with the whole story, red and blue are the two colors that are most easily remembered and used to render the storyline in his film shoot. Then talk about the plot again. This video brought me into my personal experience, I was also very unsuccessful in terms of ‘lover’. Because of my family and childhood experiences, I was very insecure and needed emotional companionship, almost all my love has been cheated on and abandoned me. I have been depressed many times because of emotional bruises and even developed psychological barriers. But the good thing is that I have my friends, just like in the film, the boy had troubles with his girlfriend, and his brother took out two bottles of wine to accompany him without saying a word. My friends are the same way, I don’t need to say anything, they can understand my inner thoughts, accompany me to go out on a trip, and drink and sing at the beach all night, it is they who accompany me out of the blue mood.

Episode 2 – Jiabao Mo

Art of Microbudget Assignment 5.2 Studio Reflection

The studio production that I am reflecting to are ‘Intelligence’ by Henry Keogh and ‘Reconciliation’ by Xinran Wang. I find that the features of ‘Intelligence’ are very interesting, especially using ‘cold blood and lifeless sounding of AI-generated voiceover are truly creative while remain cohesive with the overall topic of this short film. The story left with an open ending for audiences to further imagine and comprehend which are also notably creative. I think it will be very hard to create this kind of film with the minimal budget, but Henry did very well execute this short film and raises my nerves to the technology throughout the film without any special effect; by using voiceover to help interpret the story plot, the overall length of his short film is shortening which means he will spend less time and money during shooting stage. He did very well on the use of sound effect to provoke audiences’ emotion. Overall, Henry’s ‘Intelligence’ did very well in fitting with the key idea of the studio, he produced a very deep and intellectual thriller short film while keeping the minimalism elements in his work. ‘Reconciliation’ produced by Xinran Wang did the same thing. The drama genre film is a very suitable genre for microbudget film; however, it is also very difficult during the pre-production stage, especially to create an engaging story plot and the message of the film are very significant for this kind of films. And I think Xinran did very good job in creating a conflict between the protagonist and her mother which speaks a lot of struggles and words for international student; the misunderstanding with the family when they are not around you and loneliness are reflected throughout this short film. Xinran also did very good job in building up the emotion of the protagonist from frustrating to the final relief, the emotion build-up is very structured. She also applies some small tricks in saving budget of her short film, for example, she applies the natural lighting throughout her scenes which are very appropriate and reflecting the mood of the character. From a cloudy and lightless day at the start to a sunny day at the beach in the end. Therefore, I think Xinran produced a very good short film, which are clear and profound for audiences while remain the key ideas from the studio.

At the end of semester, I also attended to an event made by another studio, the Festival Experience studio. I think they also presented a very good event and exhibited what they have learned during the studio. The event took place on The Capitol theatre near Flinders Street. The process is very easy, and the ticket are fairly cheap, I went on the first day and all the members of the class are very nice and helpful. We watched two short and one horror film about Vampire. The selection of the film is also very good, because I am a huge fan of horror film. I had a very enjoyable night with my friends, and I highly recommend to come and experience this studio event. Two important features that explained why I recommend are listed below.

– First, the website that Festival Experience studio created is very clear and professional, there is link to all the social media that they created, and you can have more understanding about their event and what they are presenting. The list of all the options is clearly presented on the front page of the website, from Tickets info to Merchandise that they created on their own. It is very accessible for all students to come and enjoy some good movie with their family and friends.

-Secondly, the event process is very simple, you just need to bought the ticket for the day you want to go and present your QR code to the staff to check. There is a shop where you can buy some drinks and food, also there is a desk where you can buy some merchandise that students created, such as bookmark, post card and so on. The flyer with the film description on it are also very helpful for audiences.

The overall experience in attending this studio event are very good and I think they have achieved the key ideas of the Festival Experience studio.
