Week 1 Blogpost_Elsa

(1) Class Discussions

I believe this article is from a classical book. Because and especially at the start of this article. We can see some high-quality clear explanation table of the differences between different modules and modes. And these information inspired me a lot on media. I will highly recommend media industry workers and who love the movie, to keep this article. Whether it is for reference or a model of the industry.

(2) Film Reflection

“Window water baby moving” by Stan Brakhage in1958 is a bold and poetic documentary. It also meets the poetic conditions: “Affective ; new way to see and comprehend the world” (Nichols, 2017). It records the process of giving birth to a child. First of all, I chose it because it is very short, less than 20 minutes. Secondly, the director did not use any words to describe the film, which makes people feel strange at the start, just like watching a poetic photo album. To analyze this film, it has two-time points. The first is the time point of the movie itself. When this (1) is moving forward, which is like pulling a car, and the car behind is the (2) second flashback time point, (2) is also pulled forward. The movie is full of Montage techniques. Also, his soundtrack created a tense sense to the whole. This made this video unforgettable. Finally, I do not recommend people to watch this documentary if it is non-necessary, because its overly real style may scare many people, while it will also be deeply shocking.

(3) Documentary Sketch

In week 1, we need to do a documentary sketch practice, our theme is “escape” and my main job is to shoot different material for the editor. As I’ve done some editing before, I know that it is good for the editor that as much material as possible. So when I am doing the shooting, I tend to make a timeline in my mind(this can make the outcome more logical). For example, in one part of my video, I shoot the process that ⑴ open the door and get in a car,⑵driving with medium and close-up, ⑶then get off the car. The whole timeline may help the editor and director easier to understand and have a better presentation of the idea.
