Week 1 Reflection and Epiphanies

First week of uni, fresh out of the holidays. I actually was in another Studio, it was a radio one and I thought it would be nice for a change. But after going to the studio on the first day of Uni, a full 5 hours of awkward introductions and as to why we chose the class and how good we are at radio..stuff? after realising I had wasted my 5 hours on something I CLEARLY know nothing about.

So, not long after that I asked Almighty Paul if he could be a top bloke then he placed me under his wing to Scene in cinema.

Films can be broken down, to me it digs deep starting from 1)the film 2)the chapters 3)sequence 4)scenes 5)shots. (and everything in between; audio, colour themes, continuity)

But an entire film depends on scenes, and we think of movies through Great scenes and that makes it a GREAT movie. So, the class to me, teaches the importance of a scene and how there are many ways to project a thought, a shot, a story.

We take for granted the short scenes with the good stuff in it and we tend to generalise the film. So I believe I will slowly learn how to improve making a scene in this class. Then slowly move on to scenes (with an s). Then eventually make my way up.

Epiphany:
Some, if not most, French films tend to be made by artists who have cameras. So the french impressionist film we watched in films and history felt strange but it did have an emotional pull to it, in a sense that the film was full of feels.

I can remember only about 3-4 different soundtracks throughout the film. but it sets the mood and keeps placing you back in this hypnotic state because you recognise the songs after a couple of scenes. The repetition used really makes us question the movie and I Needed to know who this Usher guy is, because i only know the singer.

The story is pretty much about a guy getting obsessed with a painting of his wife. As he paints his masterpiece it sucks away the life of her already dying wife to be absorbed by the painting (it actually blinks). To me it speaks about how people can be so obsessed with perfection and detail to beauty that they don’t appreciate what is real, because they want to go beyond life and death. Painting and art in general is to give people and things alike, Longevity. So that it can be remembered and appreciated for eternities to come.

And deciphering the movie today in a world where beauty is determined by the media. We too get sucked in the idea of perfection.
Magazines and photos online are not new to the concept of photo alterations/manipulations.
But i think of why people in general are very speculative of one another. We value ourselves through status, labels and self fulfilment, how worthy we are. So we try to find similarities with idols to feel as if we are a fraction of what they are (or how they are seen).

But aren’t all forms of media like that?
We never seek truth or reality in what we consume ourselves with, we need excitement and something different, we could be boring any other time.
If we had a movie about Joe and he was normal like everyone else and looked average and lived an okay life, no one would give a damn. Average guy+ Average life= Reality

so manipulation of truth is key, we need to give people what they look for in their lives. We have an average guy plus something extraordinary= Blockbuster movie that inspires a lot of people to do stuff
If we had Joe the guy who lived an average life found a crazy amount of cash then he goes crazy travelling the world and seeing how good life is, that is a movie that people want.
