Discussion of Project #3

Instead of classes last class, Paul met up with us individually to discuss our project that we will be working toward this semester.

I had gone into this meeting with a very broad idea of what I wanted to achieve, which was to explore perspective through framing and also acquire and advance my skills in filmmaking. After discussing with Paul the direction I’m heading with both my studies and general life projects he ended up guiding me toward the project that I will be executing and how I will achieve it.

I approached Paul with my intention to create visually appealing frames but also create these frames with rich meaning. I explained how I want to drive my shots by motivated means, which weren’t clear to me until after this meeting.

We discussed how I enjoyed exploring other artists creative processes and how much I enjoyed doing so in my Media 1 project CAT. The only problem being that this project was made extremely poorly with very little skill as it was one of my first ever projects as a media maker. This is where Paul suggested that working on this same project could be a great opportunity to advance on my skills. He explained how we often end up working on the same things in our career and how this isn’t necessarily a bad as it allows us to delve deeper into the topics.

It was here that I realised I had always been reluctant to working on ideas I’ve already approached in the past. For example if I had written an essay on a certain topic I would avoid it at all costs. I realised this has been one of my downfalls. I need to learn to take my ideas and my knowledge and expand on it. I often scratch the surface of the topics I approach, and even when I look back at all the posts in my blog I find that I stop writing just as my content is beginning to deepen.

I want to learn to delve deeper into topics and themes and especially my skills as a filmmaker.

I may find that I repeat my self a little to begin with, especially through my planning process, but this might be what allows me to explore topics in more detail rather than on a wholistic level.

This is why I have chosen to take my project on Cat and expand on the already existing ideas. This will also give me an opportunity to advance my technical and conceptual skills as a filmmaker, while also being able to track my progress.
