Jodie Le to screen work at MAKESHIFT Exhibition

Bachelor of Communication (Media) student Jodie Le has been selected to screen her work at the MAKESHIFT Exhibition at RMIT in May. MAKESHIFT is an ecologically-themed event that explores improvisation and thinking-through-making as a way to re-engage with a more-than-human world.

Jodie’s video piece e-waste was created as part of her studies in Documenting the Environment, a studio run by Dr Kim Munro in Semester 1, 2020, during the first lockdown.

MAKESHIFT opens in Megaflex, Building 8, RMIT City Campus, on 29 April, and will run through Thursday 6 May.

Congratulations Jodie!

The New Normal International Film Festival is here!

The Festival Experience Media studio adapted quickly to the changing times, and will run the inaugural New Normal International Film Festival from 4-6 June!

New Normal Film Festival banner.

The New Normal International Film Festival 2020 has arisen in response to the unprecedented times we currently find ourselves in. At a time of vast social isolation, the festival aims to keep the spirit of cinema alive, fostering a sense of community and celebration in filmmakers and lovers the world round.

Through a live stream of short films and engagement with the filmmaking community the festival will explore the concept of the ‘New Normal’, aiming to discuss what is considered as ‘normal’ both in the past and present, whilst looking to a possible shared future.

The festival emerged from the Media studio ‘The Festival Experience’, which has been closely monitoring and responding to how film festivals are changing modalities to cope with lockdown. The festival is sponsored by RMIT, The Capitol Theatre, RMITV, Finger Food People, SYN Radio, and Fix ‘N’ Chips.

Studio leader Cerise Howard, and students Jaie McGuiness and Amelia Leonard appeared on Primal Screen on 3RRR on 1 June to discuss the festival — listen here!

Conversations in Isolation Podcast

The “Room With A View Media” studio was hard-hit by COVID-19, given they had planned to produce the long-running 3RRR show of the same name as part of their studies into radio production and programming. Once 3RRR suspended in-studio activity, the studio was left in the lurch.

However, some quick thinking and hard work by studio leader Heather Jarvis and the students involved has led to the Conversations in Isolation podcast, now available on all podcasting platforms.

The podcast features in with lawyers, musicians, fellow students and more on how they’re keeping busy and spending their time during lockdown.

Rough Cut Film

A huge congratulations to B.Comm(Media) grad (and current Honours student) Samuel Harris and fellow alumni of the MIFF Critics’ Campus, who have established the film criticism website Rough Cut. The site will house reviews of films, festivals, interviews and other cinema-related articles.

The website was also recently featured on Criterion Daily, so is getting some serious international traction (and traffic!):

A group of young critics in Australia have banded together and launched an online publication, Rough Cut.Among the highlights so far are Ivana Brehas’s audiovisual essay on “moments of physical opposition” in Elaine May’s Mikey and Nicky (1976), André Shannon’s interview with Carlos Reygadas, and Valerie Ng’s essay on Jacques Tati’s Mon oncle (1958), which “draws humor from the community of things, the collective action, and the culmination of parts—the architecture of rooms, windows, and doors; of people, children, and dogs, materializing a gentle portrait of social practice.”

Well done Rough Cut team!

Global Experience: Reimagining India

Congratulations to Media student Anna K Miers who has recently returned from an amazing adventure in India as part of a global experience. She put together this video documenting her experiences.

Anna also sent through this summary of the tour:

“We spent a few weeks travelling around India: from Delhi, to Agra, Jaipur and then Mumbai – visiting various NGOs, tech startups, and cultural sites. Spending the day at Sheroes in Agra, Jaipur Foot in Jaipur, and the Dharavi slums in Mumbai, were the three absolute highlights of the trip, and provided amazing insight, especially as someone who is pursuing a career in documentary film & photography, into connecting with people, learning and documenting within a relatively small amount of time.”

Well done Anna!

Student Success: The Gnomologists in Byron Bay!

Congrats to second-year Media student Tristan Winter, whose film The Gnomologists has been selected for screening at the Byron Bay International Film Festival!

Tristan sent through this synopsis:

The locals of Gnomesville, Western Australia share the history and the conflicts they’ve faced with the ever-growing population of Gnomes.

Shot over 2 days, and edited over 7 months, I really wanted to create awareness of Gnomesville because there was a giant flood that went through there this year and washed away a lot of the Gnomes in the main section. So hopefully this film will inspire people to go to Gnomesville with a Gnome in hand and help the Gnomes rebuild what they’ve lost. #prayforgnomesville

The Gnomologists was produced as part of the Documentary as Action studio in 2017.

Screen Australia Funding Success

This has been a huge week for RMIT graduates, adjuncts, and Program Advisory Committee (PAC) members, with a bunch taking a cut in some $17 million of Screen Oz funding across online, feature film, and documentary.

The Unlisted

Writer Mithila Gupta and director Corrie Chen — both Media grads — will be working on the greenlit teen series The Unlisted; adjunct professor Robert Connolly will adapt The Dry for the big screen; PAC member Lucy Maclaren and her team will follow up the huge success of Inside the Firestorm with Aftermath: Beyond the Firestorm; and current PhD student and frequent studio guest Helen Gaynor has executive produced the short animation Bright Lights: The Perils of the Pokies.

Inside the Firestorm (you can watch this on Kanopy via the library website)

Congratulations to all!

AV Media Design + Uniting = Food for Families

The Audiovisual Media Design studio from Semester 2 has resulted in a wonderful campaign for Uniting called Food for Families. The studio was responsible for the video content, created across the semester (and well into November!) and now distributed via Uniting’s various media platforms.

Over the last few months the students have worked tirelessly to develop these captivating short videos to demonstrate the impact of ‘giving a little’ to others this Christmas. We’re delighted to share the students’ hard work. We hope these videos inspire you give a little and mean a lot to someone who really needs it this Christmas.

See the Uniting Facebook page here and the campaign page here. Well done all, and please do give a little if you can — it makes a difference at this time of year.
