How do we relate to Popular Culture.

I believe we relate to it in ways we can. It depends on the people. Some may relate to it in superficial ways. On the surface, maybe people have the same name or look like celebrities or they relate to a topic and value the opinions of popular themes like sexuality (things like homophobia is slowly becoming less a problem due to the media and how they project the issue. Tv series like Glee has a recurring theme because of a few of the characters. Elton John proven the point of making people more accepting of homosexuality.

Even political figures turn to popular culture icons. Martin Luther King Jr has been quoted so many times and movies have been made about the black community to sort of highlight social issues that the community faces.

So we relate popular culture to not only the arts, but also history and politics. Popular culture is almost like general knowledge received through mass media rather than school or strictly from books. But Pop culture can be deformed/reformed to have different meanings and imply an alternative truth. Films especially. We know Abraham Lincoln played a big role in freedom of speech for the minority, which was at the time, coloured slaves. but what we didnt know is that he killed vampires too. Abraham Lincoln the Vampire slayer was move released in 2012, was not a blockbuster hit. But it sure did have an interesting twist to a political figure. And the same year hollywood released the grammy winning Lincoln.

So the point is, the movies projected might have not been true, but it pays hommage to the icons. And for people who have not heard of Malcolm X, Abraham Lincoln, Che Guavera might just hear the names through popular films. And mentioning a name can go a long way. it could spark an interest in people’s hearts to actually find out what these people have done to be mentioned in films.
