Analysis and epiphanies Week 2

This week was interesting, we had to pair up in 6’s so that we could share 3 cameras in a class. so we had about an hour to record a scene about a creep, well, creeping on two women. I was the first one to have a go at directing along with old classmate Jesse and Emerald as my camerawoman and Assistant Director. We weren’t given dialogue so we were free to use our creative juices.

I’ve been watching the Breaking Bad Spin-off Better call Saul, and it was set in the 90’s, so commercials were at their peak with cheesy lines and the director Vince Gilligan used the theme for the Trailer and Teasers. Great Cinematography yet cheesy commercial. Anyway, I wanted to sort of Pay homage to Bob Odenkirk who plays Saul Goodman. fast one liners with direction and snappy remarks.

on ‘set’ (building 3, with the printers and near the toilets) So the actor, 1)Michael was suppose to enter frame with his fly New Balances and Jesse (Camera Operator) tilt up wards, while Michael does the Fonzie motion to compliment his already so cool shoes.

2)The two actresses Mia and Amy, sit on the red sofa and notice Michael and we have close ups on both the ladies as they converse.

3)Then we do a high angle on all three subjects with having the tripod on top off the sofa (safely) as Michael.

4)Then the last shot is of the Girls(‘s?) reaction as they ‘break the fourth wall’ and look directly into the camera.

I enjoyed my time being a director of a 3 minute sequence.
I actually broke the 180 Degree line a few times, I didnt think of that, so it sort of warped the whole logic of where the subjects sit.
But other than that, It was nice to call the shots then be able to reverse rolls and be THE subject in the same hour.

Epiphany: It was a lot of fun I realised that with having these limitations on us; no handheld, no zoom and all that really gives us a chance to use what we can. The restraint is very helpful, it really shows potential in so little technique (or a lot, depends).
