Ideas new

The experience of filming my ‘speaker’ script was a great experience in learning the limitations of filming something. Despite only having 45 minutes, to pre-prod and shoot, I felt that my script didn’t really work. This was due to both my memory of the location when writing the script was a little different to what the location looks like in real life.

Whilst thinking of a new sequence I wanted to film, I knew I wanted to explore character movement within a space. Whilst thinking of what I could film, I kept on thinking of the scene I chose in my last scene analysis of Good Time, where Connie and who he thinks is his brother go into the strangers living room to use the phone. I thought that the movement and dialogue within the small setting was really beautiful.

Another example of movement within a confined space would be the scene in Kids, where Casper and Telly steal alcohol from a corner shop. Despite a lot of people’s reservations toward this film (I personally think it’s a terrific film), I think this scene is really great example of a number of really simple shots, that make the action looks really nice.

I am also really keen filming an absurd sequence, that doesn’t really follow any specific narrative.  I am of the thinking that student films that explore something emotive nearly always end up pretty cringe. Despite his obvious indiscretions, I have always been a huge fan of Louis Ck’s TV shows, feature films and many short films. Having studies filmmaking at NYU, Louis obviously both an amazing eye in scene construction, watch the episode of Louie called In The Woods for an example of this ability behind a camera and amazing sense of narrative or lack thereof. In Ugly Revenge starring a young Amy Poehler and JB Smoove, the narrative is completely absurd but the shots are so eloquently sequenced and constructed that it doesn’t matter.

In my new idea, partly inspired by the drug dealer scene featuring Alfred Molina in Boogie Nights and an episode of Review with Myles Barlow featuring Australian actor Anthony Hayes playing an exaggerated drug dealing version of himself, I want to portray a young high schooler going to a drug dealers house to buy weed. I want the sequence to all take place in a disgusting lounge room (where I live at the moment would be perfect), where a terrifying  teenager sits next two three crazy 20 something weed dealers who are doing bizarre things.

I was envisioning the three dealers who are mates of the high schooler brother, to all be doing something different in the enclosed space, I was thinking one could be cooking something on a camping gaslit stovetop, one could be sitting uncomfortably close to the high schooler and the last person could be djing in the corner. From there and a series of dirty over-the-shoulder POV shots I could film playing out.

I personally would prefer not to use any music but I do have a friend who makes pretty hardcore drum and base music who would be very keen for his music to feature in something.

This is what I’ve come up with so far – I feel no one in my next group will be evening remotely keen to do it. I however am super keen to shoot it before my lease runs out.

Will upload script next assignment/before week 9.
