Heaven Knows What

For my second deconstruction I decided to analyse a scene from the Safdie Brother’s second feature film Heaven Knows What. Unlike the scene I chose to deconstruct in the Safdie Brothers’ most recent film Good Time, which was set in a tiny lounge room, I wanted to analyse their shooting style in an outdoor setting. Heaven Knows What follows a heroin addicted Harley, whose life is being turned ruined by her sadistic on and off boyfriend. The scene I am deconstructing appears later in the film, when Harley reconnects with her boyfriend Ilya. The pair decide to leave NYC and take a bus out of state. … Continue reading Heaven Knows What

Colour Grade

Colour grade 1 1.1 In this grade, I wanted to create a clear contact between the wooden walls and the black electronic speakers and TV. For this effect, I over exposed the image to give it more light, from there I decreased the contrast to darken the wools to create a sense of realism. I then increase the whites and decreased the black by 69 and 79 respectively. This put emphasis on both colours. I chose not to alter the colour of the shadows, midtones or highlights. 1.2 In the second grade I wanted to create a moodier tone. I … Continue reading Colour Grade

Ideas new

The experience of filming my ‘speaker’ script was a great experience in learning the limitations of filming something. Despite only having 45 minutes, to pre-prod and shoot, I felt that my script didn’t really work. This was due to both my memory of the location when writing the script was a little different to what the location looks like in real life. Whilst thinking of a new sequence I wanted to film, I knew I wanted to explore character movement within a space. Whilst thinking of what I could film, I kept on thinking of the scene I chose in … Continue reading Ideas new

Two Line Group

For our two-line script group shoot, Jeevan, Tristan and I set out to shoot a meeting between two characters. This was the first time we used clapper boards and the shoot turned out to be a great lesson in group shooing. I think the main element that I took away from the shoot was the hierarchal structure on the set. Which I soon realised was extremely important to ensuring that the shoot ran both smoothly and efficiently. For this particular shoot we had Tristan as the Director, Jeevan on boom, Aria helping us out with the slate and me on … Continue reading Two Line Group

My script / Speakers / Disaster

The shoot from week six proved to be a humbling lesson in the importance of pre-production.  We decided to use my pitch idea due to easiness of the location I was thinking of using (the speakers in the hallway parallel to the classroom). My idea was to shoot a person walking through a space and being distracted by two speakers making noise above them. From there I was planning on the distracted subject accidentally bumping into a second subject and dropping all their things. At the time of writing the script I thought that the idea would work really well … Continue reading My script / Speakers / Disaster

Movement

After six weeks of filming actions with a stationary camera, we finally were allowed to pan. I feel that having the tilt lock firmly sealed for the first seven weeks really affected the way I approached the movement exercise, this became evident in my pan starring Caitlin and Tristan. My idea was to film Tristan and Caitlin meeting briefly, before Tristan walks off. From there, I planned on panning Tristan walking away through a glass door, the more I panned, the more a reflection of Caitlin’s stationary silhouette would become apparent. Despite what I thought was a brilliant idea, my … Continue reading Movement
