Tagging is highly useful as it allows us to find exactly what we want with ease. However, it was not always available so readily and took a few years to evolve into what it is today. The original concept of using key words to cut down searching time, is dated back to well before the 20th century with paper data storage systems using this technique. Tagging first emerged on the internet as a way for web designers to communicate to web search engines, what webpages were about. It wasn’t until 2003 that users were able to create their own tags; although at this point it served as a sorting system for users’ bookmarks.A few years later and users were finally able to add their own tags to pictures, which made them highly searchable. Tagging is incredibly helpful as it allows content to be effortlessly accessed through browsing/searching. Nowadays tags are generally chosen informally by the content’s creator and are well loved by social media users alike.
