From tracking my media use I learnt a lot about myself and the ways in which I use media. As I focused on a different aspect of my media use each day, I was able to come to a new conclusion every day. I surprised myself on some days with just how critically I could think about how I use different apps and services. On the first day I decided to just list how I use media on a daily basis as a starting point. I described how my morning had a regular routine of apps and services I would use and then after that it would be a bit more random. I made a prediction that by the end of the week I would know for a fact that I was a very passive consumer and I wasn’t wrong about this. I had never thought too critically as to why I was such a passive consumer but knew I was pretty self conscious. From the exercise I learnt that I’m such a passive consumer, due to my early experiences with social media.

When I wrote about entertainment on the third day, I came to the conclusion that social media has transformed the general public into demanding and ravenous consumers who quickly become disenchanted with material and are always searching for the latest thing. On my sixth day, I looked at streaming services and was particularly interested in the economic side of things with services getting consumers to pay for a premium version. On my final day I surprised myself by creating the labels of Genuine and Ingenuous to describe the two different types of notifications. I didn’t think it was possible to think so deeply about my media use until after this exercise.

I think when writing my essay I will at least touch on each of my aforementioned topics briefly. I would be interested to explore my conclusions about myself as a passive consumer, how social media has altered the public’s attention span and notifications. I will have to do some research relating to these topic’s to support my claims in my essay.
