Bottled Drama

The ‘bottled drama’ although not formally recognized as a genre however has certain characters that can be seen in many films and more commonly in television series as the ‘bottle episode’. The ‘bottled drama’ can be defined as a genre which is usually script heavy, contained to a single location, uses a minimal cast and is shot with a low budget. This is seen in television series often when the series has minimal budget left. The use of bottle drama is popular in science fiction and the location can be easily contained to one area. An example is the Dr Who episode ‘Midnight’ in which the Doctor who is stuck on board a ship with several other people, as they become trapped as a mysterious monster begins to hunt them. Some films that can be considered bottled dramas are Exam (2009), Buried (2010), Tape (2001) and The Breakfast Club (1985).

A film that could also possibly be considered a bottled drama film 1997 film Cube. This is a sci-fi horror film and although it appears that they are constantly changing rooms the small cast are actually being filmed in the same location constantly, however different colours aims to differentiate rooms. This film is also low budget, filmed on $350,000.

Coherence was the screening for this week which was about a group of friends having a dinner night. Most of the film takes places in the house dining room, bar a few small scenes.

Coherence was one of those films you have to sit and think about afterwards. It was quite complicated in its storyline and a bit confusing at times. It was interesting to see how a complex storyline can drive what appeared to be initially a rather simple narrative. The cliffhanger ending also I found left me with many questions at the end of the film.
