Week11 Reading: The Attention Merchants

This week’s reading is about Tim Wu’s opinion of advertising from his 2016 book called ‘The Attention Merchants’. I read both the introduction and epilogue. He argued that advertising is a avoidable toxin for people and it’s a mistakenly indentation in 20 century. However, I believed that  ‘Whatever is reasonable is true, and whatever is true is reasonable.’(G. W. F. Hegel)

As I mention, there must be a reason for the thing showing up and keeping appear in people’s life. People accept a large number of advertising everyday even every moment. I can not say that there is no bad influence for people to accept advertising. Individuals did be forced to accept advertising. However, we can not say the thing we are forced to accept is must useless for us. For example, children are forced to study by their parents, they still learn knowledge. People also get information from various of advertising. It’s also a way for individuals to know latest news of the world. Although, there are still some harm for people. For instance, advertising may be broken people’s thinking and influence their emotion while they watch video. However, there are also some enjoyable advertising for people to watch, such as public service advertising.

In conclusion, advertising is created by production economic. Sometimes, it may make some harm for people. However, we can not deny its all advantage because of his one disadvantage.
