Week 8 Workshop: Project Brief 4 Brainstorm

Today our Project Brief 4 group had a really productive workshop session. We filled out the collaborative contract, figured out our available meeting times, brainstormed an overall idea what the media platform and content for our topic, jotted down minutes for the meeting, as well as decided what we wanted to have done when we check back next Monday.

We have decided that the area we will be exploring is the contrast between traditional media institutions and new media institutions. New social media platforms such as Twitter are largely derived from the idea of the power of the people and the fact that everyone can be a journalist, so there are a variety of different opinions presented. However, traditional media forms such as newspapers and commercial TV news potentially have more bias because they are controlled by a select group of people with high power and are linked to economic and political agendas. In particular, we thought about the example of Rupert Murdoch and his power over print media in Victoria. We also got some feedback from Robbie to think about how social media has affected traditional media, for example newspapers taking false information from online without fact checking their source beforehand.

As for the media form of the project, we are planning to create an interactive multi media platform of a blog/website that includes various articles, images and videos.

I think that we have made good progress so far and are on the right track, especially considering the lack of direction regarding the project brief outline from last week.
