This article relates the idea of smart wearable devices to the concept of the “Internet of things” – the interconnected ecosystem of smart devices everywhere.  It discusses the various means by which a wearable device could communicate with other devices.  The article also outlines the application of such devices and ecosystems in the area of medical advancement. The article focuses on a proposed way in which the physical performance and health of an athlete can be monitored through smart textiles.

The article contains a well-researched, academically positioned exploration of one of the positive aspects of wearable technology. The text focuses on a single specific case study (sports performance monitoring) in respect to wearables. This is favourable in that it provides our research with a specific example to reference.

The article’s use to our research comes through its contextualising of wearable devices to the internet of things. Thus, the scope of our research is widened, as information has been provided through which we can connect other technologies and mediums to wearable devices.
