WEEK 2)
After a week of settling into the new media rooms and getting to know everyone’s names (mostly) we got stuck into work in Week 2 of ‘Everyone’s A Critic’. To prepare for class I read through ‘Film Criticism: The Next Generation’. Some interesting notes I took from this reading was that being a critic is really just an extension of being a viewer, context is key and as you write your thoughts will become clearer because you’re turning your opinions into a cogent argument. We also listened and read some critical pieces on trip-hop artist, ‘Tricky’ which ended up with a good discussion on short reviews versus long form pieces.
In class we watched an interesting panel discussion on criticism with Adrian Martin, Mel Campbell, Fenella Kernebone and Gillian Armstrong, which was hosted by Peter Mares. It was interesting to listen to their opinions on the importance of critics and how the role of the critic is changing with time.
On Wednesday we had our first critiquing session! I got to read Mikayla’s which was really funny and about Ed Sheeran’s cameo on Game Of Thrones. Mikayla critiqued my review on Girl Boss and gave me some useful tips to redraft.
