Media 6

Week 3

I think this week’s reading by Lobato and Thomas has a strong relevancy to my future. I think it applies strongly to all the people who are graduating or entering media professions of all kinds. It addresses the issue of freelancing and being taking advantage of as a young professional in a manner that has crossed my mind many times.

The connection made between being a modern day creative and entrepreneurship is something that makes a lot of sense to me. Entering into a field where there are many people aiming towards positions that there aren’t many of, it helps to be creative in your approach and also creative in your work and this takes a lot of breaking out from the crowd. It also ties into the point about labour coming back into fashion. These days it means a lot to prove that you’re willing to put in the physical labour that comes with a media job and being able to go the extra mile is an indicative character trait.

The other point I found interesting was the note about how people with creative qualifications are often found outside the creative industries, applying themselves to different sectors. Here they’re making note of how the experience in other fields and strong emphasis on group work, that is encouraged within creative learning, helps people in the industry to become malleable to other sectors of the workforce. So even though the future of the creative person can seem shaky and uncertain within their industry, their future in total can be diverged elsewhere due to their wide range of experiences in other areas. Essentially suggesting that creatively qualified people are better off than those classically educated for commerce or business.

Overall this reading was relative to my future and made some good points to provide some thinking points for me and where I see myself going.
