As I sit on a peak hour train on the way home, people watching the abundance of people around me, I realise the amount of media that is surrounded by us. Many people, unsurprisingly, no matter how squished they may be, are on the phones. I see people swiping up, swiping left, swiping right, taking snapchats on their smart phones. I see others reading a book, listening to music, reading the ads around them. I’ve always known that media is around us, but as I learn more if this program it has forced me to notice how influential media is to us.

While at home studying, there is always a tick in the back of my brain telling me to check social media, telling me to snapchat my friends, telling me to find something to post. As citizens become more influenced by media, we gain an urge to create. An urge to gain someone’s attention. Gauntlett’s text on how creativity and making is at the centre of media right now allowed me to realised that this urge to post can be used as a positive. It has allowed to understand that I need to learn to use this urge to my advantage and create something, anything, to make a change – no matter how small the change may be.
