Homework | Reflection

While I didn’t get a chance to complete week one’s homework (overloaded with shifts at work of which I’ve since said “hey, that’s probably way too much while you’re studying”), I did place importance on completing week two’s homework- ‘make the bed’. I really wanted to try and make the piece interesting. Although I don’t particularly feel like I achieved this, I was quite happy with one shot in particular; my bird’s eye shot. I personally felt that the boxing of the frame combined with the angle of the shot made for an interesting sequence in the short overall. I felt this because, when first confronted with it, it takes the viewer a second to really grasp what is happening in the frame, making them actively participate in the viewing experience.

One thing I did learn from this exercise is to NOT shoot in 4K video unless you know what you’re doing (which I most certainly did not). When I saw the setting on my phone, I thought ‘oh this’ll be a neat experience, it’ll be better quality etc. etc.’, unfortunately, I found that when it came to editing the footage together in Premiere Pro, that my computer was unable to render the files fast enough for me to preview the footage. This led me down the rabbit hole, trying to learn to create proxies so the footage would load in the preview screen and ultimately left wanting to throw my computer against a wall- but I digress. From this, I produced a piece of media that didn’t exactly look as high-qual as I’d hoped for, but allowed me to realise that instead of just jumping into certain things, such as exploring new media, that doing a little research beforehand can be invaluable when it comes to post-production.
