‘Red Room’ and Deliberate Film – Nathan Lee

The film I chose to direct and produce for Deliberate Film was what I think the perfect one to make while studying during the COVID-19 quarantine. Although going into this studio I expected to make something more, something more grand, I understand that certain restrictions on the environment and different circumstances cannot limit our creativity, and I am proud of what myself and my class as a whole were able to achieve while against all odds.

Red Room is a film that centers on themes such as curiosity, the dark web and the supernatural. After hearing of a mysterious website known as “The Red Room”, two friends Alex and Ange buy into the myth and search the underground web to uncover the truth and what mysteries it holds. Before too long, Alex finds herself sucked into the great unknown.

Instead of seeing the Zoom technology that was used to make this film as a disadvantage, I instead went in a different direction and used it as a pro, thinking of it more as a “zoom film” that capitalizes on the format, and bringing it to the forefront. From creating this film, I have come to use my limited accessibility as a power, how to improvise more and also find new ways to bring my creative vision to life. I have thoroughly enjoyed this semester and while I wish there was more I could have got out of what we learnt, I am still happy overall for the lessons I learned and will continue to use them in future.
