Lost and Gain: ‘The Book’ of Deliberate Film – Kelvin Xian

Learning about filming is much about experimenting and testing ways we can write, film, and edit a story. For deliberate film this semester, like many other media studio, we had to cope with learning through isolation. While there are many disadvantages in remote learning and shooting, there is also something very unique and simplistic about the approach. By losing all the conveniences create through distance (time, technology, etc), we are force to adapt and focus on the essentials of efficient storytelling.

My final project of the studio is ‘The Book’, which talks about a person leaving a book for a brief second and lossing it in the process. With little control over the actual production/shooting of the film, I put most of my effort in pre-production and post-production, creating effective storyboards for all participating members, producing multipe variations of test sample, experimenting with different colour grading and music. During the process, I was freed from the technicals of shooting, learnt to trust group members, and explored the possibilities and potentials of thoughtful editing.

Many thanks to my group members, Lili Callisto and Samuel Cucinotta, for their patience and insightful ideas, and to studio head, Paul Richard, for his consitent guidance during the hard time. Hope you enjoy this film!
