  1. Freeland’s article provides a critique of the Attentional Theory of Cinematic Continuity (AToCC) presented by Tim Smith. Through this theory Smith attempts to identify the critical role visual attention plays in the perception of continuity and also to explain several key elements of the continuity editing style. Although Freeland ultimately agrees with Smith’s assertion, she takes his idea and explores them further. She explores these ideas in three main areas. In the first area focusing upon recent philosophical work she suggests that Smith is neglecting the link between real world vision/perception and agency. She predominately compares the theorists and studies utilised by Smith with other examples that illuminate another aspect of his argument. Ultimately Freeland doesn’t present any counter arguments to those of Smith and rather focuses upon trying to explore his work in greater depth.
