Written and directed by Rachel Perkins, 2009.

Bran Nue Dae is an Australian musical comedy-drama film adaptation of the 1990 stage musical Bran Nue Dae by Jimmy Chi. The film tells the story of the coming of age of an Aboriginal Australian teenager on a road trip in the late 1960s.

Bran Nue Dae grossed $7,680,192 at Australian Box Office (Screen Australia, 2015) the audience award for best feature at the Melbourne International Film Festival ahead of political thriller Balibo. (ABC News, 2009)

Bran Nue Dae delved into the musical-genre. Craig Mathieson from SBS notes the importance of indigenous filmmakers exploring different genres, allowing them to make their mark on the Australian film industry.

He does this by comparing Bran Nue Dae with Samson and Delilah.

“The two films could not be more diametrically opposed – respectively the lacerating, still to the point of silence contemporary character piece and the effervescent period musical – but together they provide a beachhead for Aboriginal filmmakers with white Australian audiences while recharging the stocks of our national screen profile”. (Mathieson, 2009)
