EYE NOTICE

“Professional noticing is what we do when we watch someone else act professionally (teaching a lesson, working with a client, delivering a lecture etc) and become aware of something they do (a task they set, a pattern of speech they employ, a gesture they use…”

Pause.

A gesture they use.

This point in John Mason’s reading, ‘The Discipline of Noticing’, brought me back to last Sunday’s experience at Church. There I was, sitting in the middle of a stuffy Chapel, on a hard wooden pew, listening to one man deliver a somewhat uplifting speech. Actually, I’m not too sure it was uplifting. I can’t remember. All I took away from his 30 minute ramble was what not to do when standing at the pulpit.

I noticed throughout the duration of his talk, this man had the constant need to touch everything. And by everything, I mean everything. He would mutter a sentence and then lightly straighten his papers. Another sentence was read, then he’d rub the pulpit (as if it was his pet or something). He’d read another sentence, then straighten his tie…

These gestures carried on throughout the entirety of his speech and I have to admit that at first, it was aggravating to watch. Each gesture made my blood boil. It was like I was watching Dancing With The Stars- too much movement. But by the end of it, I couldn’t help but laugh. I could literally pinpoint the exact time he would move and reach out to touch something around him. What a laugh.

Speaking of laughs and Church…
