Film 3 – 24/8

In this class, the set task was based around editing the footage from last week. However, I had done most of this editing in the last class. Luckily, after a discussion with Robin, where he agreed with most of my problems with my scene, I was able to go out and ultimately reshoot the entire scene. The central things that I was aiming to achieve with these reshoots included longer shots, slower walking, as well as more creative angles and tracking shots – more like the scene from the film.

After a much less rushed shoot, I was far happier with my results, as there was a far greater sense of tension to the scene, and it also just looked a lot cleaner. When editing the footage, I cut two versions.

One is essentially one tracking shot of the whole action. I like this version a lot, and think it may be the most effective and reminiscent of the original scene.

The second cut involved much more shots and angles, which perhaps gives a better coverage of the action. And it also required me to actually edit something.

Overall, I found this class extremely useful, as it kind of introduced me to the idea of redoing something that I wasn’t happy with, rather than trying to make the best of what I’ve got. Also, this also demonstrated the potential usefulness of doing something badly, as the second and superior scene clearly wouldn’t have been made without the inferior first scene.
