As a bit of a thought I was having a think about whats next for our group and what I want to get out of it.
We initially thought of having two different scenes but it was recommended to us to focus on just one for now. As a group I think we will have to decide whether we do the same scene again but improve it slightly change lighting, shots etc, or create a whole new scene learning form what we previously did.
In my head I really want to create this dining room setup, ever since watching American Beauty, gaining inspiration from photographer Gregory Crewdson and watching many other dining room scenes I’ve always wanted to create this very surreal, stylised awkward dining room scene.
I feel like this would be a great opportunity to create something in terms of what we’ve learnt through this studio lighting.
I really envision (having the location in my living room) three large windows all which have shutter blinds. I wish to stimulate the sunset through 3 lights outside each window with orange gels outside each and creating that shutter light showing the dust particles and the light and shadow. I really wanted to play around with shadow and how this would effect the facial structure of three different individuals sitting and completely different angles. I also wanted to perhaps include candlelight and see how to play around with shadow and the movement of this.
In my head I visualise a really awkward, long pauses, jarring vibe that really beautifully lit. In my mind I see three individuals and the relationship they have with each other at the dinner table, what is seemingly a super mundane and normal environment yet I want it to feel a bit off.
I had an idea for a script just briefly that I would want to play around with.
I really wanted to start with a few shots extreme close ups descrbing the situations, the dust falling from the blinds, the dinner table setup, the leg of a chair. Followed by the overall scene.
Script
INT. DINING ROOM TABLE
wife and child sit waiting at a dining room table, husband walks into shot and sits down.
Husband: pass the salt
salt gets pushed to other end of table and close up of hand touching salt. Awkward silence amongst everyone in the room as the salt is shook onto meal.
Child: are you guys getting divorced yet
the mother gets up and walks away, the child looks at her mother leaves whilst the husband starts eating his dinner.
Here is an extremely rushed and brief storyboard I chucked down in 4 mins. I would definitely refine this if we ended up using this as a shoot. I also think if we did decide to do this I would really want to direct the whole piece. Having control over how I wanted it to look, I really want to learn and push myself in this course. currently I think Im not quite allowing myself to see what I can achieve I think I allow other people who are more experienced than me take the lead but then in that aspect I don’t feel like Im learning and I feel like Im just becoming more afraid to try. SO ! if we don’t end up shooting this as a group which is fine I really want to give it a go by myself where I direct the overall shoot.
