Research ‘The Piano Tuner’

My work seems to have taken a slightly different turn this last week focusing more on locations and different footage of places rather than specifically on Penelope. This week I have a few choices, I can use what I already have and edit together snippets of moments tying together using the audio collected with Penelope and the footage I have shot on my own. But I’m concerned this wont give enough contrast to each separate investigation or clip. I have a lot of different footage but the music sounds the same, it has the same mood. I feel as though I want them to be separate in themselves but able to be tied together in a cohesive way. Next week I want to shoot some more footage I just have to decide whether that’s using my initial subject or collecting more abstract footage. I don’t want to sway too far from my original idea because I really enjoyed spending time with Penelope and hearing her play.

I’m also aware that her voice plays an important role in telling the story or sharing an experience especially over the top of the footage unrelated to her. I think if the footage is abstract, the story and voice needs to be a consistent thread throughout the clips, or at least I would like it to be.

This short film ‘The Piano Tuner’ is really beautiful in the way it sets up the relationship the musician has with his instrument. The sequence of shots at the beginning of the film are tied together with the protagonists voice introducing his story. We are about to be taken on a journey of his experience and relationship with the Piano. I really love the role the voiceover plays in the set up to the story and I would like to explore that more in my own explorations over the next week and see how it effects and informs the footage I have already collected.
