First workshop

So today was my first official day at RMIT.

Media 1.

It was class mostly of introductions as we discussed the latest ‘new media’ we had each discovered most recently. I shared my experience at the coburg drive-in which is also a nice change of pace from just sitting inside a bland and sometimes, rather chilly cinema. There was discussions of reality tv shows such as Project Runaway to the huge decline in children’s programming, most importantly the reboot of one of my most treasured childhood show Bananas in Pyjamas. Bananas in Pyjamas was a show loved by many running from 1992-2001 featuring giant costumed characters. I was even fortunate enough to own the PC game until I lost it along with almost every other PC game I ever owned.

The show was then rebooted into a CGI series in 2011, which I have had the displeasure of actually viewing once when I unknowingly stumbled across it a few months ago. It seems to me that the general animations style of most children’s programmes has declined significantly over the years, or perhaps I was just fortunate enough to live through the era of people actually bothering to dress up in crazy costumes (teletubbies, anyone?). Or perhaps technology has simply jumped leaped and bounds in CGI animation and I’m just to bias to like anything but animation I originally grew up with.

The rest of the class included setting up this delightful blog you are reading now as well as learning about our upcoming assignment. The assignment included portraying one’s self through different forms of medium, including video, image, sound and text. I think this is a good project to start thinking outside of the box, as we will we be forced to represent ourselves through media that does not include your standard ‘selfie’.

I look forward to further develop my blogging skills and here’s to hoping that I won’t leave these blog posts to the last minute every week!
