The Pen – Ella Watt

My final media product “The Pen” explores how drama is used to motivate camera movement and operation. I wanted to challenge my normal ways of filmmaking by moving away from static, jump cut shots, to a one-shot take, using camera movement to create different frames and shot sizes. The process involved writing a shot script, with clear potential for the drama and dialogue to initiate camera movement. I blocked the actors, and recorded a version on my iPad to act as a storyboard, as well as to get a sense of how the real camera would need to move. I then filmed the scene about 15 times, stopping to reflect every time the take was good to see if it was perfect and if there was anything to improve. I actively asked for feedback from the people I worked with to make sure I had some other perspectives, and it helped to slow the process down a bit instead of rushing through it. Overall, I really loved experimenting with a one-shot take and will continue to refine this technique in my future filmmaking.
