Let’s Talk: Extinction in Australia

Topic: Climate Change

The claim that we explored was related to climate change and the extinction of species. It was made by Richard Di Natale, regarding the extinction rates of species in Australia. He said that Australia had the highest loss of species in the world and it was proven to be true.

We felt that this topic was extremely important and critical. So what better than to use sarcasm and satire to activate critical thinking, in order to get people to take action?

We made use of satire within our prototype to bring out how dire the situation is. Climate change is something that everyone knows is happening but does not care about it seriously. We wanted to make a point using images and videos.

There are different types of content that we included in our prototype. We used infographic videos, vox pops and different images related to the topic. Using a bad edited stock image of the Tasmanian tiger was our way of showing that we were using satire and not trying to alarm the public. We had to make the sarcasm really obvious so that the audience knows that we are just playing around and not actually serious. When the satire is not strong enough, it might be presented as fake news. So we made it a point to tell the audience that we are just joking.
