  1. Group A:
Nick’s response to Brief 4’s video – “Boxers”

    Boxers:

At home I’m confronted with the ugly image of what I am.
Cold, distant and unable to connect.
They ask me to care now, but I was taught otherwise a long time ago.
People’s words go straight through me and I do not feel their meaning.
I try to look like I have empathy for them,
Show that I understand what they’re going through,
    But it’s all an act.
So people don’t see me for what I am.
    Unfeeling.

It all changes in the ring,
    I feel everything there
The punches, the anger, the adrenaline,
    I love it.
    It makes me feel free.
    It gives me purpose.
Sure it’s violent, but when I feel the sharp pinch of pain in my ribs,
    Of my opponent’s jabs
My body demands I do something.

I wish that this wasn’t my only escape.
That I could laugh and love, find joy in the everyday.
But I was taught the world would beat me down every opportunity it got.
So I became tough, mean and detached from the world.
    My world is the ring.

  2. Interesting responses in terms of tonality. All three works are tonally very different. I’m curious to know more about what it was in each work that lead you to this diversity. The use of sound in your video Mya is just great, it kept me on the edge of my seat!
