This article is centred around the relationship between director and editor and what Dancyger describes as the “director’s idea.” This idea is what motivates the director to make certain decisions in the process of filmmaking so that their film conveys subtextual ideas. Directors also shape and personalise the narrative content in line with that idea. Focusing upon how these ideas can be communicated through editing, the article ultimately focuses on direction rather than process or theory around editing. Dancyger provides close analysis of a number of sequences that utilise editing as a means of making the film’s subtext salient. In this analysis the focus is once again on the director’s intentions rather than the implications of the editing itself.
