  1. Smith’s reply is concerned with clarifying his original remarks around his idea of Attentional Theory of Cinematic Continuity in response to a number of critiques presented by scholars (including both Freeland and Smith’s articles discussed earlier in the bibliography). Throughout the piece Smith addresses some of the key points his colleagues had raised. He either provides clarification of his initial points or makes a suggestion for future investigation that incorporates their ideas. In relation to Freeland’s critique Smith discusses agency in greater depth whilst also agreeing that the extent to which the viewer is active across a cut should be topic of further research. Throughout the piece Smith does acknowledge some flaws in his original work but for the most part he continues to discuss its worth in relation to the critiques and suggests that any inconsistencies could be rectified with more research.
